Hybrid

Papaya was bred by Nirvana Seeds, a Dutch seed company known for making well-established genetics widely accessible to home growers. It’s most commonly described as a cross of Citral #13, a Pakistani indica landrace prized for its citrus terpenes, and Ice #2, an Afghan-Skunk-Northern Lights hybrid that won the 1998 High Times Cannabis Cup.
Here’s a quick snapshot of the Papaya strain:
Type: Hybrid (roughly 70% indica, 30% sativa)
THC Range: 18%–25%
Aroma: Ripe papaya and mango, with earthy, spicy, and slightly peppery undertones
A handful of sources instead list Mango as one of the parent strains, so the exact lineage carries a little ambiguity. Whichever version is accurate, Nirvana has described the strain as their take on a tropical Mango-style cultivar, bred specifically to chase that fruit-forward profile. The strain sure earns its name. The aroma smells like the real fruit, sweet and tropical up front, with a spicier, peppery edge underneath.
That combination of sweetness and spice has made it a popular building block for other tropical-leaning hybrids over the years. THC typically runs between 18% and 25%, and it has also developed a reputation among hash makers specifically for how easily its trichomes detach during processing. Looks-wise, Papaya tends to produce dense, blade-shaped buds with bright green leaves and brown pistils, wrapped in a thick, crystalline coating of trichomes.
