Joseph Jerigan

Joseph Jernigan is a Fresno–based painter and the originator of Sweat Painting, Jernigan works his own sweat directly into the surface of his paintings, combining it with powdered pigment to build images he describes as “encoded with life.” The technique emerged from what Jernigan has called a yearning for self reconstruction and self recognition in a chaotic world, at a critical moment in his life.

For Jernigan, the physical labor of exercise and the meditative discipline of painting are inseparable. Rather than retreat into comfort, he has said his work asks us to confront the more difficult facets of the self, treating the studio as a space for the kind of self-examination usually reserved for meditation or therapy. Sweat becomes both material and metaphor: a literal trace of effort and vulnerability pressed into the paint itself.

His works include Contemplate, Retograding, Medusa, and the ongoing series documenting his process, How It’s Made. Jernigan’s paintings have been shown through the Arts Council for Long Beach’s Artist Registry, and his practice continues to evolve at the intersection of visual art, wellness, and personal ritual.
