Gelato

4.8 (247 reviews)

Gelato cannabis strain showed up in the mid-2010s out of the Bay Area, bred by Cookie Fam Genetics as a cross of Sunset Sherbet and Thin Mint GSC. It’s named after the Italian frozen dessert because of its aroma. Since then, it’s become a staple in dispensaries across the country and the genetic backbone of many premium strains released in the last decade.

About Gelato Strain

Here’s a quick snapshot of the Gelato strain:

  • Type: Hybrid (55% indica, 45% sativa)

  • THC Range: 18%–25%

  • Dominant Terpenes: Caryophyllene, Limonene, and Humulene

  • Aroma: Sweet cream, citrus, berries, and a subtle earthy finish

The flavor is the thing people come back for. Sweet and creamy up front, with a citrus and berry complexity that lingers. It smokes smooth, which makes it approachable even for people who are particular about harsh smoke.

Effects-wise, people report an uplift that feels creative, focused, mood-elevating, which is followed by a physical relaxation that’s comfortable without being immobilizing. It’s an evening strain for most people, though some find the mental clarity in the early effects useful for creative work or low-key social settings.

With THC typically landing between 18% and 25%, Gelato is solidly potent but not extreme. It’s one of the more forgiving strains at this THC level because the onset is gradual, but that gradual ramp is also why it’s easy to underestimate. Pace yourself when using gelato, especially if you’re grabbing a phenotype you haven’t tried before.

Visually, Gelato buds are dense and almost jewel-like, with deep forest greens and striking purple hues beneath a heavy trichome layer that gives them a frosted, high-end look. The orange hairs woven through the purple make it one of the more visually distinctive strains you’ll find on a shelf.

Gelato Cultivation Notes

  • Genetics: An indica-leaning hybrid (Sunset Sherbet x Thin Mint GSC), moderately difficult to grow — not ideal for total beginners, but manageable for someone with a season or two of experience.
  • Climate: Prefers a warm, semi-humid climate outdoors (70-80°F / 21-27°C) with cooler nights to help bring out its purple hues. Indoors, moderate humidity works during veg, but needs to drop in flowering (40-50%) since dense buds are prone to mold.
  • Growth pattern: Bushy, compact structure with moderate stretch — sits somewhere between OG Kush’s bushiness and Blue Dream’s height. Produces heavy, resin-coated colas that often need extra branch support later in flowering.
  • Flowering time: Around 8-9 weeks indoors; outdoor harvest typically early to mid-October.
  • Yield: Moderate yields — not as high as Blue Dream, but generally a bit more generous than OG Kush, especially with good canopy management.
  • Susceptibility: Dense bud structure makes it somewhat prone to bud rot/mold in humid conditions, so airflow and humidity control in late flowering are important. Reasonably resistant to pests otherwise.
  • Nutrients: Responds well to standard feeding, though many growers add extra phosphorus/potassium during flowering to support the heavy resin and trichome production it’s known for.
  • Training techniques: LST and topping work well to even out its bushy structure; SCROG can help manage the dense canopy and improve light penetration to lower bud sites.
  • Temperature swings: Notable for developing purple/blue hues when exposed to cooler nighttime temps during late flowering — a trait growers sometimes intentionally encourage for bag appeal.
