The Green Crack strain dates back to the late 70s, bred by an Ohio-born grower who eventually settled in Athens, Georgia. He crossed a Skunk #1 with an unidentified Afghani landrace, then spent years hunting through the offspring for the right phenotype. What he landed on, he called Cush.

Then, sometime in the early 2000s, a sample of Cush found its way into Snoop Dogg’s hands in California. As the story goes, he tried it, felt the effect, and rebranded it to Green Crack on the spot. The name stuck, even though some growers and dispensaries still prefer the softer Green Cush.

The Skunk #1 lineage is responsible for the pungent, sharp backbone running underneath Green Crack’s fruitier top notes. Mango tends to hit first, followed by a bright citrus peel note and a faint sweetness that some describers compare to honey. The Afghani side of the family contributes sturdier genetics, denser bud structure, better resilience against the occasional rough growing season, even though it doesn’t show up much in the aroma at all.

The dense, compact buds coming from the Afghani side make the strain a little more indica-like in appearance than its sativa-leaning genetics might suggest. Bright orange pistils and a solid trichome coating round out the look.

THC typically ranges between 15% and 25%, though potency has crept upward over the decades as growers have refined their cuts, with some modern phenotypes testing higher.

  • Genetics: A sativa-dominant hybrid (Skunk #1 phenotype, sometimes crossed with Afghani indica lineage), relatively easy to grow — a solid choice for beginner-to-intermediate growers.
  • Climate: Prefers a warm, sunny climate outdoors (70-85°F / 21-29°C) with moderate humidity, lowered through flowering. Fairly tolerant of heat and less finicky than other sativa-dominant strains.
  • Growth pattern: Tall with a strong stretch during early flowering, similar to Blue Dream and Jack Herer — often needs extra vertical space or training. Vigorous growth with good branching once trained.
  • Flowering time: Around 7-9 weeks indoors — on the shorter side for a sativa-dominant strain; outdoor harvest typically late September to early October.
  • Yield: Above-average yields, especially with topping/training — one of the more generous producers, similar to Blue Dream and Pineapple Express.
  • Susceptibility: Good natural resistance to mold and mildew given its airy bud structure; generally a forgiving, low-maintenance strain overall.
  • Nutrients: Responds well to standard feeding schedules; vigorous growth means it can handle slightly higher nitrogen during veg without much issue.
