S. Mercedes Lovett is an artist whose work is driven by an enduring fascination with the natural world. She does not claim to fully understand why she paints the subjects she does; she simply knows she is continually amazed by the beauty of nature. Painting is both a necessity and a source of deep fulfillment, allowing her to express herself through the richness of color, texture, and the physicality of paint. She paints because she needs to.
Born in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, Lovett left at just ten days old and spent the next three decades traveling throughout the continental United States. Along the way, she studied at the University of Oregon in Eugene, the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, and the University of Florida in Gainesville. Never remaining in one place for long, she supported herself through years of bartending before eventually settling in California’s Central Valley, where she worked as a zookeeper at Chaffee Zoo. It was there, surrounded by extraordinary wildlife, that her lifelong appreciation for animals deepened. In the nearby foothills, she finally found a place to call home.
Lovett’s work is rooted in a deep respect for the animals she paints. Remaining true to the essence of each species, she seeks to imbue them with individuality, character, and a story of their own. The creative process often leads her in unexpected directions. Not every painting finds its way, but when it does, the experience feels nothing short of magic.
