Hybrid

Gelato cannabis strain showed up in the mid-2010s out of the Bay Area, bred by Cookie Fam Genetics as a cross of Sunset Sherbet and Thin Mint GSC. It’s named after the Italian frozen dessert because of its aroma. Since then, it’s become a staple in dispensaries across the country and the genetic backbone of many premium strains released in the last decade.
Here’s a quick snapshot of the Gelato strain:
Type: Hybrid (55% indica, 45% sativa)
THC Range: 18%–25%
Dominant Terpenes: Caryophyllene, Limonene, and Humulene
Aroma: Sweet cream, citrus, berries, and a subtle earthy finish
The flavor is the thing people come back for. Sweet and creamy up front, with a citrus and berry complexity that lingers. It smokes smooth, which makes it approachable even for people who are particular about harsh smoke.
Effects-wise, people report an uplift that feels creative, focused, mood-elevating, which is followed by a physical relaxation that’s comfortable without being immobilizing. It’s an evening strain for most people, though some find the mental clarity in the early effects useful for creative work or low-key social settings.
With THC typically landing between 18% and 25%, Gelato is solidly potent but not extreme. It’s one of the more forgiving strains at this THC level because the onset is gradual, but that gradual ramp is also why it’s easy to underestimate. Pace yourself when using gelato, especially if you’re grabbing a phenotype you haven’t tried before.
Visually, Gelato buds are dense and almost jewel-like, with deep forest greens and striking purple hues beneath a heavy trichome layer that gives them a frosted, high-end look. The orange hairs woven through the purple make it one of the more visually distinctive strains you’ll find on a shelf.
