GG4

GG4 came about in the 2010s, when breeders Joesy Whales and Lone Watty of GG Strains were working in Las Vegas, growing Chem’s Sister alongside Sour Dubb, and a hermaphroditic Chem’s Sister plant unexpectedly pollinated the Sour Dubb crop. Instead of tossing the resulting seeds, the pair planted them out, grew four distinct phenotypes to evaluate, and selected the fourth as the standout, which is where the name comes from.

About GG4 Strain

Here’s a quick snapshot of the GG4 strain:

  • Type: Hybrid (roughly 63% indica, 37% sativa)

  • THC Range: 22%–30%

  • Dominant Terpenes: Caryophyllene, Limonene, and Humulene

  • Aroma: Heavy diesel and pine, with an earthy, chocolate-tinged depth

The strain was originally called Gorilla Glue #4 because the resin production was so extreme that it left scissors gummed together during trimming. It didn’t stick around due to trademark issues with the glue company, but people still call it either that or just Original Glue.

GG4’s Chemdawg lineage (via Chem’s Sister) is responsible for much of its diesel-forward intensity and sour edge, while Sour Dubb adds another layer of that same sour-diesel complexity along with a heavier body component. Chocolate Diesel rounds things out, contributing to the strain’s depth and resin output.

THC typically runs between 22% and 30%, putting it among the more potent hybrids, with some especially resinous cuts testing even higher. Looks-wise, GG4 is about as visually on-brand as a strain gets, with dense, chunky buds blanketed in trichomes, and sticky enough that handling the flower without it clinging to your fingers is nearly impossible.

GG4 Cultivation Notes

  • Genetics: A hybrid (Chem’s Sister x Sour Dubb x Chocolate Diesel), moderately challenging to grow — best suited to growers with some experience, known for being sticky and resin-heavy in a way that requires careful handling.
  • Climate: Prefers a warm, dry climate outdoors (70-80°F / 21-27°C) with low humidity through flowering. Indoors, it’s sensitive to humidity swings late in flowering given its extremely dense, resin-coated buds.
  • Growth pattern: Medium-to-tall with moderate stretch and vigorous, bushy branching. Known for producing some of the heaviest resin coverage of any strain, which can make buds fragile and prone to snapping without support.
  • Flowering time: Around 8-9 weeks indoors; outdoor harvest typically early-to-mid October.
  • Yield: Above-average yields — one of the more generous producers in this lineup, especially with proper training and support.
  • Susceptibility: Dense, resin-heavy buds are prone to mold and bud rot in humid conditions, so airflow and humidity control are important. Otherwise fairly resilient against pests.
  • Nutrients: Responds well to standard feeding schedules; some growers add extra phosphorus/potassium in flowering to fuel its notably heavy resin production.
  • Training techniques: Topping and LST help manage its vigorous branching; SCROG works well to even out the canopy. Branch support (stakes/trellis) is especially important here given how heavy and sticky the buds get.
