Strawberry Cough

Strawberry Cough’s origin story starts less with a breeding program and more with a lucky find. Sometime in the 90s, a home grower in the Northeast stumbled onto a plant with an unusually intense, fresh-strawberry aroma. A clone eventually made its way to Kyle Kushman, then cultivation editor at High Times, who recognized how unusual it was and began growing and distributing it around New York before bringing it to California.

About Strawberry Cough Strain

Here’s a quick snapshot of the Strawberry Cough strain:

  • Type: Hybrid (80% sativa, 20% indica)

  • THC Range: 18%–24%

  • Dominant Terpenes: Myrcene, Pinene, and Caryophyllene

  • Aroma: Ripe, fresh strawberry up front, with earthy undertones and a peppery finish

The strain went on to win Best Flower at the 2013 Cannabis Cup, cementing its reputation well beyond the East Coast basement where it was first discovered. Its most widely accepted lineage traces to Strawberry Fields crossed with Haze. The Haze side shows up in the smoke, which is dense, expansive, and prone to catching in the throat, as its name suggests.

THC typically lands between 18% and 24%, with some modern phenotypes pushing noticeably higher than the strain’s original, more moderate potency. Strawberry Cough tends to grow smaller, denser buds than most sativas, with strawberry-red pistils threaded through olive-green flower and a heavy, glistening coat of trichomes, giving the strain a lot of visual character packed into a relatively compact bud.

Strawberry Cough Cultivation Notes

  • Genetics: A sativa-dominant hybrid (Strawberry Fields x Haze), moderately easy to grow — a good choice for growers with a bit of experience, forgiving but rewards attentive training given its height.
  • Climate: Prefers a warm, sunny climate outdoors (70-80°F / 21-27°C) with moderate humidity, lowered through flowering. Handles heat reasonably well thanks to its Haze lineage.
  • Growth pattern: Tall, sativa-leaning structure with a notable stretch during early flowering — similar to Jack Herer and Green Crack in this respect. Long, airy branches that benefit from training to fill out the canopy.
  • Flowering time: Around 9-10 weeks indoors; outdoor harvest typically mid-to-late October given its sativa-dominant genetics.
  • Yield: Moderate-to-above-average yields, especially with proper training to manage its height and encourage bud development along the branches.
  • Susceptibility: Good natural resistance to mold thanks to its airy bud structure, making it a reasonably forgiving choice even in less-than-ideal humidity.
  • Nutrients: Responds well to standard feeding schedules; not known for unusual sensitivity.
  • Training techniques: Topping and LST are commonly used to manage the significant stretch and encourage a fuller, more even canopy; SCROG also works well given its long branches.
