ZKZ, also known as Zkittlez or The Original Z, is a hybrid cannabis strain with an interesting genetic lineage that got its name from the popular candy brand. The strain is a crossbreed of Grape Ape (an indica-dominant hybrid), Grapefruit (a potent sativa), and a third, undisclosed cannabis strain.

There are multiple popular phenotypes within the Zkittlez family, including Blue Zkittlez, Forbidden ZKZ, Melonaid ZKZ, and others. They are available in a variety of product types, most notably as whole flower, pre-rolls,  infused pre-rolls, concentrates, vape cartridges, and disposable vape pens. Zkittlez is considered an exotic cannabis strain due to its unique attributes and terpene profile. 

ZKZ buds are compact and come in multiple colors, ranging from deep greens to purples with blue hues. They also contain vibrant pistils (hair-like strands) that range from fiery red to bright orange shades. The surface is covered with a frosty layer of trichomes, making the buds sticky to the touch. 

 

ZKZ Cultivation Notes

  • Genetics: An indica-dominant hybrid (Grape Ape x Grapefruit x undisclosed third strain), relatively easy to grow — a forgiving choice for growers with some experience.
  • Climate: Prefers a warm-to-cool climate outdoors (65-80°F / 18-27°C) with cooler nighttime temps late in flowering to bring out purple hues, similar to its Grape Ape parent. Moderate humidity through veg, lowered in flowering.
  • Growth pattern: Short, bushy structure with minimal stretch — sits in the same compact family as Wedding Cake and GDP. Dense lateral branching with buds that can need support once they fill out.
  • Flowering time: Around 7-9 weeks indoors; outdoor harvest typically late September to early October.
  • Yield: Moderate yields — solid but not among the most generous producers, consistent with its compact structure.
  • Susceptibility: Dense buds can be prone to mold/bud rot in humid conditions, so airflow matters. Otherwise fairly resilient and low-maintenance.
  • Nutrients: Responds well to standard feeding schedules; doesn’t have unusual or finicky nutrient demands.
  • Training techniques: LST and topping help open up the compact canopy for light penetration; SCROG works well given its short, bushy growth habit.
