Granddaddy Purple, or GDP for short, first appeared in 2003 in the Bay Area. Ken Estes is widely credited with commercializing the strain, though the actual origin story has a bit of mystery baked into it. Most sources describe GDP as a cross of Purple Urkle and Big Bud, while Estes himself has attributed it to a different blend involving Mendo Purps, Skunk, and Afghan genetics.

About Granddaddy Purple Strain

Here’s a quick snapshot of the Granddaddy Purple strain:

  • Type: Hybrid (around 70% indica, 30% sativa)

  • THC Range: 17%–23%

  • Dominant Terpenes: Myrcene, Caryophyllene, and Pinene

  • Aroma: Sweet grape and berry, with an earthy, sometimes floral undertone

Whichever lineage version you go with, Purple Urkle gets consistent credit for GDP’s signature deep-purple coloration along with its grape-forward aroma, while Big Bud contributed the strain’s dense, heavy bud structure and strong yields. That combination made GDP something of an early “super strain,” picking up multiple Green Cup wins in the mid-2000s and a High Times Cup nod in 2015, and it’s remained a fixture on cannabis dispensary shelves for over two decades since.

THC typically runs between 17% and 23%, with potency shifting depending on the cut and cultivator. Looks-wise, GDP lives up to its name with deep purple buds, sometimes shading toward near-black, dusted with a heavy, frost-like coating of trichomes that stands out sharply against the color underneath. It’s one of the more visually distinctive strains on any shelf.

Granddaddy Purple Cultivation Notes

  • Genetics: An indica-dominant hybrid (Purple Urkle x Big Bud), relatively easy to grow — a good choice for growers with some experience, forgiving but rewards attention to temperature for color development.
  • Climate: Prefers a warm-to-cool climate outdoors (65-80°F / 18-27°C) with cooler nighttime temps late in flowering to help develop its signature purple hues. Moderate humidity through veg, lowered in flowering.
  • Growth pattern: Short, stocky, bushy structure with minimal stretch — similar growth habit to Wedding Cake and Biscotti. Heavy lateral branching with dense, chunky colas that often need support once buds fill out.
  • Flowering time: Around 8-9 weeks indoors; outdoor harvest typically early-to-mid October.
  • Yield: Above-average yields — one of the more generous producers among the indica-dominant strains in this lineup, thanks to its Big Bud lineage.
  • Susceptibility: Dense, chunky buds are prone to mold and bud rot in humid conditions, so airflow management is especially important. Otherwise reasonably resistant to pests.
  • Nutrients: Responds well to standard feeding schedules; doesn’t have unusual or finicky nutrient demands.
  • Training techniques: LST and topping help open up the dense canopy for light penetration; SCROG works well given its short, bushy growth habit. Branch support (stakes/trellis) is common once colas get heavy.
  • Temperature swings: Particularly notable for developing deep purple hues when exposed to cooler nighttime temps during late flowering — growers often intentionally induce this for bag appeal, similar to Gelato.
